Gutter Replacement: Replace the System, Not Just the Run

Gutter replacement means taking the old system down completely, checking and fixing the fascia behind it, and hanging new gutters and downspouts sized for the roof. It is the right call when the old gutters are rusted through, bent beyond straightening, too small for the roof, or leaking at every seam.

Repairs have a limit. A gutter that drips at one corner can be resealed. A system that sags in three places, overflows in every storm and has been patched twice is telling you its metal and its slope are gone. New gutters cost more now but stop the cycle of small repairs.

Replacement is also the moment to fix what the old system hid. Years of overflow soak the fascia board, and rot behind the gutter shows up only once it comes off. That is better found and priced up front than discovered when new gutters are half hung.

What the work includes

  • Removing old gutters, hangers, downspouts and brackets
  • Inspecting the fascia and the rafter tails for rot and water damage
  • Replacing or repairing damaged fascia where it is part of the scope
  • Measuring and sizing the new system from the roof area
  • Installing new gutters with fresh hangers and the correct slope
  • Fitting new downspouts and extensions
  • Sealing corners and outlets
  • Hauling away the old material and cleaning the lawn and beds

Signs it is time to replace rather than repair

01

Rust holes or flaking metal along the bottom of the trough

Sealant at joints has failed more than once, and patches keep dripping

04

The same stretch overflows in every heavy rain because it is too small

05

Water has stained the siding or rotted the fascia behind the gutter

06

The system is a patchwork of mismatched parts from several past repairs

How the work goes, step by step

Describe what is failing

Mention overflowing, rust, sagging, leaking corners, and whether the fascia looks soft.

What changes the price

Length and height
The footage around the roofline and the number of storeys set the baseline.
Size and metal
Upgrading from five-inch to six-inch or from aluminum to steel or copper changes the price.
Fascia condition
Replacing rotted boards adds material and carpentry hours.
Downspouts
More outlets, larger pipes and longer runs add to parts and labour.
Removal and disposal
Taking away old material is priced separately by some firms.
Roof complexity
Valleys, dormers and many corners need more cutting and sealing.

What a good quote spells out

  • Whether the old gutters are replaced in full or only in part, and why
  • How rotted fascia is found, replaced and charged if it is only discovered during the work
  • The size, profile and thickness of the new gutters and downspouts
  • What is done with the old material and the lawn or flower beds around the house
  • Warranty terms on the new system, in writing

Gutter Replacement: questions people ask

How do you know if gutters need replacing?

Rust through the metal, repeated leaks, sagging in several spots and sections that no longer hold slope are the usual signs. One bad corner usually only needs repair.

How long do gutters last?

It depends on the metal, the climate and upkeep. Aluminum generally lasts many years if kept clear, while galvanized steel can rust sooner, and vinyl may crack with age and cold.

Can new gutters go onto old fascia?

Only if the board is sound. Soft or rotted fascia cannot hold a hanger, and it needs to be replaced before the new gutters go on.

Is replacing gutters a good time to upgrade the size?

Yes. If the old gutters overflowed in heavy rain, going from five inch to six inch and from 2x3 to 3x4 downspouts is much cheaper to do now than later.

Do all gutters need to be replaced at once?

Not always. If one side is in good shape and the right size, a partial replacement can work, though matching colour and profile with the existing run can be difficult.
